The most frequently used airlines to travel to Madeira are:

  • Transavia (Lyon, Nantes, Paris Orly, Porto, Amsterdam)
  • TAP (Paris, Nantes, Toulouse, Porto, Lisbonne, Londres)
  • EasyJet (Lisbonne, Londres, Bristol, Édimbourg)
  • Aigle Azur (Paris)

Regular flights run year-round, usually via Porto or Lisbon. Feel free to search for connections yourself to find better prices.

Ryanair may be useful for this, with flights from Bordeaux, Carcassonne, Clermont-Ferrand, Dole, La Rochelle, Lille, Lorient, Marseille, Paris Beauvais, Paris Vatry, Poitiers, Saint-Étienne, Strasbourg and Tours to Porto.

Many comparison sites are available: SkyScanner, Kayak…

Other airlines at Funchal Airport:

AeroVip (Porto Santo) · Monarch (London, Birmingham) · Airberlin (Berlin, Düsseldorf) · TUIfly (Cologne) · Norwegian (Copenhagen) · Luxair (Luxembourg) · Jetairfly (Tenerife)

By boat

Currently there is no longer a ferry service from the mainland. Plans to reopen maritime links are regularly discussed.

Taxi

The quality of taxi service comes at a cost.

  • Indicative price of €60 for a journey from the airport to our cottages
  • This service is also available for full-day hire, but it is relatively expensive
  • In Funchal: approximately €15 to reach the Botanical Garden

Car rental

We highly recommend this option: renting a car gives you the freedom to easily discover the whole island at your own pace and according to the weather.

  • Budget approximately €40 / day
  • Be wary of false bargains — some attractive prices hide unfavourable contract clauses
  • Driving must adapt to winding mountain roads
  • The expressway network serves the southern part of the island from east to west

Bus

It is difficult to travel across the whole island by bus, especially if you wish to reach the less touristy levada and hiking starting points.

However, 3 areas are served by bus networks:
